World Prayers

by Angela Montano

Extraordinary prayers have been written and recited throughout the ages. Ancient mystical verses that have been prayed for hundreds, even thousands of years, can profoundly affect your consciousness even as you move through the seemingly mundane tasks of daily living. From Buddhism to Islam to Christianity and more, sacred words touch the hearts of humanity. But the best prayer is the one that speaks to you in a personal way. Finding a prayer that does this to you can feel like the long-awaiting quenching of a profound thirst.

Today, many find comfort and connection practicing prayers from other faiths, as well their own. Connecting to a prayer that is meaningful to you repeatedly throughout your week will support you in feeling grounded, nurtured and guided.

Following are beloved prayers from the five major world religions. Perhaps one of these sacred passages will inspire you. I invite you to read them aloud and notice how you resonate with them.

Christianity

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

ST. TERESA OF AVILA • 1515 – 1582

Our Father, who art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever.

Amen

THE LORD’S PRAYER • JESUS OF NAZARETH • (Bible Verse Matthew 6:9-13)

Hindu

May my intellect be steady without agitation.
May it be clear without anger or passion.
May the brilliant light of the sun beam though my intellect so
that perception of the world may be clear, my discrimination
subtle, my judgment correct and quick, and my
comprehension of persons and situations precise and wise.

THE GYARTI MANTRA VISHWAMIRTA

Let us be united;
Let us speak in harmony;
Let our minds apprehend alike.
Common be our prayer,
Common be the end of our assembly;
Common be our resolution;
Common be our deliberations.
Alike be our feelings;
Unified be our hearts;
Common be our intentions;
Perfect be our unity.
Let Us Be United

Islam

O love, O pure deep love, be here, be now — be all; Worlds dissolve into your stainless endless radiance, Frail living leaves burn with you brighter than cold stars. Make me your servant, your breath, your core.

SUFI MYSTIC JELALUDDIN RUMI • 13TH CENTURY

O God,
give me light in my heart
and light in my tongue
and light in my hearing
and light in my sight
and light in my feeling
and light in all body
and light before me
and light behind me.
Give me, I pray Thee,
Light on my right hand
And light on my left hand
And light above me
And light beneath me,
O Lord,
Increase light within me
And give me light
And illuminate me.

Ali ibn Abu Talib in God Has No Religion by Frances Sheridan Goulart

Judaism

Come, let us go to the mountain of the Lord, that we may walk the paths of the Most High. And we shall beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more. And none shall be afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts has spoken.

A Jewish Prayer for Peace – Author Unknown

May the One who blessed our ancestors and named us Israel bless and heal those among us who struggle with mental well-being. May they acknowledge their own strength and resilience, treat themselves with forgiveness and patience, and find help, compassion, and resources when they need them. And, may the Holy One grant those of us who aren’t experiencing mental health issues the strength, resilience and capacity to listen without judgment and with intention, and the ability to notice when others are struggling. May we create communities that accept, uplift, and support those among us who are struggling. Now, speedily, and in a time soon to come. Amen.

A Jewish Prayer for Mental Health by Rabbi Elliot Kukla

Buddhism

May all be free from sorrow and the causes of sorrow; May all never be separated from the sacred happiness which is sorrowless; And may all live in equanimity, without too much attachment and too much aversion, And live believing in the equality of all that lives.

Traditional Buddhist Prayer – author unknown

May all beings everywhere plagued with sufferings of body and mind quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid, and may those bound be free.
May the powerless find power and may people think of befriending one another.
May those who find themselves in trackless, fearful wildernesses – the children, the aged, the unprotected – be guarded by beneficent celestials, and may they swiftly attain Buddhahood.
